Sarah Miles is the high strung Lady Caroline Lamb married to the decent Lord William Lamb. She finds passion in the poetry and person of Lord Byron and throws aside her marriage and respectability. Her husband, Robert Bolt, directs the movie. Richard describes Byron as the first rock star, flamboyant and rather cheap and plays him as such to perfection. He uses his striking looks in Regency costume to great advantage. Margaret Leighton (who played Gertrude in Richard’s TV Hamlet) appears as Lady Melbourne and gets to deliver the ultimate put down to Byron: “You’re not as good looking close up.” I adore the
script, which is witty and rings true to Regency dialogue. Not to be missed
is the costume party, where Caroline appears practically topless as Byron’s
fan bearer. Shades of Mick and Bianca! By Geri Maisano
