I will always remember visiting Denmark, that romantic summer, long ago. My husband and I were touring Europe for our anniversary, and it was thrilling to see the enormous, majestic sculpture of The Little Mermaid. Rising up out of the ocean, she waits to greet visitors, a glorious tribute to her creator, the famous Dane, Hans Christian Andersen. His version is my favorite, because it IS the original story.

As a child, I would often swim with Little Mermaid on the aspiring wings of my imagination. Her encounter with a land-dwelling prince caused the beautiful young mermaid to fall in love. Having given her heart, the stricken mermaid longs for legs, to enable her to walk with her Prince, and stay close to him forever. She chooses to leave her family and home in the ocean's depth, and embarks on a pilgrimage to find The Enchantress Of The Seven Seas, whose magic can make her human, and give her legs. The Enchantress Of The Seven Seas, requires the mermaid's beautiful voice as "the sacrifice" for granting her humanity. The Little Mermaid has a beautiful voice, and as she contemplates making such a sacrifice, she muses the many losses she has endured. Loss of her heart...loss of her home...loss of her friends and family...and now the loss of her beautiful voice.....

As the sadness becomes almost unbearable due to the loss of Little Mermaid's voice, the story is divinely accentuated and enchanted by the mellifluous VOICE of my favorite narrator, Richard Chamberlain.

You must purchase this endearing film to find out how this touching love story ends. It has a plethora of happy endings if you are willing to keep an "open-heart."
