I came late to the Slipper and the Rose. Like too many of Richard’s movies it was savaged by the American critics and vanished quickly from American theaters before I got to see it. Over the years I only caught glimpses of it on VHF channels with terrible reception. I thought, why are people so excited about this movie? It looks like a silly musical and why in the world did Richard do it?

Then I sat down and watched the whole thing in glorious color on DVD with the director’s commentary. What a charming, funny and beautiful movie. It is the movie that Disney should have made if they hadn’t been so busy suing people over the name “Cinderella.”. The songs by the Sherman brothers are lilting and clever. I remember reading somewhere that Gemma Craven’s voice in the role was described as “thin and weak.” What movie was THAT idiot critic watching? Her voice is perfect for Cinderella.

And there is no more perfect Prince Charming than Richard. Nobody else can LOOK more like Prince Charming. His voice is perfectly suited to the Sherman Brother’s music and lyrics. And I consider the scene where he first sees and dances with Princess Incognita the most romantic he has ever played, up to and perhaps including the Thorn Birds. I could watch that one scene over, and over, and over…

Aside from Richard, the other highlight of the movie is Annette Cosby as the Fairy Godmother with Bryan Forbe’s daughter’s dog Fred in a supporting role. Totally magical and enchanting!!!
